Dr. Mariel Smith Cannady, Licensed Psychologist

About Dr. Cannady

I am a clinical and school psychologist who focuses on helping children and families thrive and meet their goals towards continued development. I earned my doctorate degree in combined clinical/school psychology from James Madison University in Virginia. I moved to Austin to complete my doctoral internship at the Texas Child Study Center, a collaboration between Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas and The University of Texas at Austin.

As a school psychologist for several years in Virginia, I developed an interest in assisting and advocating for twice-exceptional students (intellectually gifted students with a disability) and students with autism. My interest in developmental disabilities led me to complete a pre-doctoral autism fellowship at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD). During that interdisciplinary training experience, I focused on assessment and advocacy for individuals with chronic medical, developmental, and behavioral health conditions across the lifespan.

Throughout my career and training, I have provided interventions for preschool and school-age children, adolescents, and young adults presenting with learning difficulties, developmental delays, depression, anxiety, conduct problems, and adjustment to chronic illnesses. I have specialized training in cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), applied behavior analysis (ABA) with a focus on behavioral parent training, and parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT). Furthermore, I have extensive experience and training in providing comprehensive assessments for children, adolescents, and young adults. At ABA Connect, I provide diagnostic assessments for children ages 2-10, as well as therapy services for children age 2-12 and their families.

It gives me great joy to see families come to understand more about their child’s strengths and needs through the assessment process and to see children progress with appropriate intervention.  My goal is to tailor interventions and assessments to each unique child and family while using well-researched methods and diagnostic procedures.

Please call us at 512-900-8116 to speak to a client care coordinator about the psychological services I offer at ABA Connect. We look forward to hearing from you!
